LCE Architects won a bid to design a new children’s sports facility. The new four court sports hall, with supporting facilities replaces the existing Centre. The building responds well to the sustainability agenda. This also helps to insulate the centre’s large surface areas and, together with sun pipes, roof mounted wind catchers providing natural ventilation and cooling and the sedum roof, contributes towards achieving a very low energy building.

This “H” form space distribution adapts well to the site form without touching the trees and creating different patios that harness their presence from the interior.The interior spaces are organized around a native tree (Cryptocaria alba) that accompanies the access from the south.

The two courtyard sub-school organization was the optimum solution for their occupancy. A principal planning challenge was to overcome the divorce of the site’s original grading from the city street system at both the south and west, and to re-integrate the site with the neighboring streets. Through design, the resultant grade differences introduced barrier-less and subtle separations between school grades.
